Staff Backend Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join their expanding engineering team in Cardiff. Our client is building innovative financial technology products used by millions of customers across the UK, with a strong focus on distributed systems, scalability, and customer-focused product development.

This is a remote-friendly role within the UK, offering the opportunity to work on complex backend systems within a collaborative, cross-functional environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services for customer-facing financial products
• Work within a cross-functional squad alongside product managers, designers, data analysts, and frontend engineers
• Contribute to distributed systems architecture using microservices patterns
• Write resilient, scalable code primarily in Go
• Collaborate on system design decisions that impact customer outcomes
• Work with technologies including Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS infrastructure
• Participate in testing hypotheses and making data-informed product decisions
• Support and improve existing services as part of the team's product area
• Contribute to knowledge-sharing across engineering teams
• Mentor and collaborate with engineers at various levels

What We're Looking For

• Strong experience working on backend systems for technology products
• Proficiency with strongly-typed languages such as Go, Java, C, or Scala
• Experience with distributed systems and building resilient software
• Product-minded approach: you care about customer outcomes and make data-informed decisions
• Comfort working in environments with ambiguity and evolving requirements
• Staff-level engineering capability (typically 8+ years of relevant experience)
• Experience with technologies such as Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, or AWS is beneficial
• Collaborative mindset with experience working across disciplines
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with stakeholders across the organization

Technical environment: Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Envoy Proxy, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, React (for internal tools)
