Staff AI Engineer- Developer Tools

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential developer tools organization seeking a Staff AI Engineer to shape the future of AI-assisted development workflows. In this highly hands-on technical leadership role, you will spend most of your time prototyping, implementing, and validating AI-powered features while helping define technical direction through engineering excellence.

Your work will include:

• Designing and delivering AI-powered features for C++ development workflows and modern IDE environments
• Architecting AI integrations, agent tools, and language-specific AI capabilities
• Building practical benchmarks and evaluation frameworks for AI-assisted development scenarios
• Prototyping and validating new AI workflows including debugging, code understanding, refactoring, and project navigation
• Collaborating with product managers, ML engineers, QA engineers, and senior developers to shape and deliver the roadmap
• Working closely with AI, ML, and product teams to help define AI strategy for the C++ ecosystem
• Evaluating and prioritizing AI initiatives while bringing new ideas that align with broader organizational strategy
• Contributing hands-on to technical design, software architecture, and implementation in a large, mature codebase
• Defining technical roadmaps for AI agent and tool integrations in development workflows
• Building trust and alignment across engineering, AI, product, QA, and ML organizations

Example challenges you'll tackle include making coding agents more effective with large C++ codebases, integrating debugging and code understanding capabilities into AI-assisted workflows, establishing evaluation benchmarks for real-world development scenarios, defining what capabilities AI agents should access inside modern IDEs, and creating better environments for developers collaborating with AI tools.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Significant software engineering experience as a Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Technical Lead, or similar senior technical role
• Strong experience with Kotlin, Java, or other JVM technologies, or ability to quickly become productive in a JVM-based codebase
• Experience building AI-powered products, developer tools, coding assistants, agents, or LLM-based workflows
• Strong understanding of how modern coding agents operate, including tool calling, context management, MCP, and evaluation techniques
• Track record of driving technical direction in ambiguous and rapidly evolving areas
• Strong product instincts and ability to balance innovation with practical delivery
• Excellent communication skills and ability to influence without formal authority

Nice to have:

• Experience with C++ development workflows, compilers, debuggers, language tooling, or developer productivity products
• Experience with IDE internals, language servers, code analysis, refactoring systems, or static analysis
• Experience leading small teams or acting as a technical lead
• Experience working on AI-native developer products
