Senior Software Engineer – Systems

Freshworks is hiring a Senior Software Engineer – Systems for a full-time position in Chennai, India. You'll take ownership of critical systems architecture, lead technical strategy, and mentor engineers whilst solving engineering challenges at scale.

Role Overview

This role sits at the intersection of product and infrastructure, where you'll design and evolve the systems that underpin our customer engagement platform. You'll work on problems involving scale, reliability, and performance—establishing architectural patterns, mentoring senior-level engineers, and driving decisions that shape how Freshworks builds for the future. You'll balance pragmatic delivery with technical depth, operating with significant autonomy whilst collaborating across the organisation.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop robust systems components that handle complex, high-scale scenarios
• Own technical architecture decisions for core platform services and infrastructure
• Lead code reviews and provide technical mentorship to engineers at all levels
• Collaborate with product teams, infrastructure specialists, and frontend engineers to deliver integrated solutions
• Analyse and optimise system performance, fault tolerance, and operational efficiency
• Investigate production issues, identify root causes, and implement long-term improvements
• Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies and architectural patterns relevant to systems engineering

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated expertise in systems design and development
• Deep understanding of computer science fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures
• Working knowledge of distributed systems, concurrency patterns, and performance optimisation techniques
• Proven experience building or maintaining large-scale backend systems, databases, or infrastructure components
• Proficiency in systems programming languages such as Go, Java, C++, or Rust
• Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, particularly when reasoning through architectural trade-offs
• Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders
