About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech client in Berlin seeking a Senior Ruby Backend Engineer with a strong focus on observability and platform reliability. Our client operates a sophisticated online platform that helps customers navigate complex financial decisions through intelligent calculators, automated matching systems, and streamlined application processing.

This role sits at the intersection of backend development and platform engineering. You'll work across customer-facing products and internal back-office tools built on Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, and Vue.js, all running on AWS infrastructure. The platform handles sensitive financial data and processes thousands of product permutations through powerful calculation engines, making reliability, security, and observability critical to success.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain resilient backend services using Ruby on Rails, ensuring calculation engines and application processing systems scale securely
• Implement and improve observability practices: monitoring, logging, alerting, and incident response workflows
• Write and maintain infrastructure-as-code using Terraform to manage AWS resources (ECS, Lambda, RDS, CloudFront)
• Participate in on-call rotations, lead postmortems, and conduct root-cause analysis to continuously improve system reliability
• Collaborate closely with backend engineers and product teams to understand system behavior end-to-end, from application code to cloud infrastructure
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that support rapid, safe deployments
• Apply security-first principles including secrets management, least-privilege access controls, and cloud security best practices
• Support both customer-facing platforms and advisor-facing back-office tools that handle email, chat, telephone interactions, and secure document processing

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 4-5+ years of commercial Ruby experience, ideally with Rails 7 or 8
• Strong RSpec testing experience and solid grasp of object-oriented design patterns
• Hands-on production experience with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code
• Working knowledge of AWS services: ECS, Lambda, RDS, CloudFront, VPC networking, IAM
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
• Solid understanding of observability principles: monitoring, logging, and alerting
• Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, ECS, or Kubernetes)
• Comfort with incident response including on-call rotations, postmortems, and troubleshooting production issues
• Good grasp of PostgreSQL operations including backups, performance tuning, and failover strategies
• Security-first mindset with familiarity in secrets management and cloud security practices
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering and product teams
• Pragmatic approach to building reliability—focusing on key building blocks and clean architecture

Nice to Have:

• Experience with serverless architectures using Ruby, Node.js, or Python
• Familiarity with GitHub Actions
• Experience defining and tracking SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets
• Scripting/automation skills beyond Ruby (Bash, Python)
• Prior experience in regulated industries such as fintech or proptech
• Experience with Sentry, GitHub, and Datadog
