Educational Testing Service seeks an accomplished Senior Research Director to lead the Center for Responsible AI in Learning and Assessment in Washington, D.C. This is a full-time position where you'll drive strategic research initiatives ensuring artificial intelligence advances educational assessment fairly, validly, and equitably across global learning systems.

About the Role

You'll oversee transformational research at the intersection of AI innovation and responsible assessment design. Your leadership will shape how artificial intelligence is developed, validated, and deployed across one of the world's most trusted education measurement organizations. This role combines original research direction with organizational influence, requiring both scientific rigor and the ability to translate findings into product and policy impact.

What You'll Do

  • Direct research on AI applications in learning and talent assessment, with focus on bias detection, fairness validation, and ethical framework development
  • Lead collaboration with assessment scientists, engineers, and product teams to integrate research insights into assessment design and AI governance
  • Publish peer-reviewed research, present at leading conferences, and position the Center as a thought leader in responsible AI for education
  • Build and develop a team of researchers and data scientists dedicated to advancing responsible AI measurement
  • Create validation frameworks and assessment protocols ensuring tests remain fair and valid as AI capabilities evolve
  • Engage with educators, policymakers, and international stakeholders on assessment equity and responsible AI priorities

What We're Looking For

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field—computer science, education, psychology, statistics, AI/machine learning, or related discipline
  • 10+ years directing complex research initiatives and leading research teams
  • Strong expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, algorithmic fairness, or bias mitigation with peer-reviewed publications
  • Understanding of educational assessment, psychometrics, or learning science
  • Proven ability to translate research into organizational, product, or policy outcomes
  • Clear communication for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Commitment to equity and responsible technology development
