Senior QPU Design Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential quantum computing organization in their search for a Senior QPU Design Engineer based in Oxford. This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in the office.

Our client is at the forefront of quantum processor development, building next-generation systems that integrate ion trapping technology with advanced chip design. You'll join a processor design team responsible for creating the hardware foundations of high-performance quantum computing platforms.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will transform operational requirements into functional chip layouts, supporting the delivery of devices that enable breakthrough quantum technologies. Your work will directly contribute to advancing utility-scale quantum computing capabilities.

• Guide chips through the complete design process, from requirements gathering to layout and tape-out
• Create layouts for complex multi-layer chips, including metal track routing and interfaces with photonics and CMOS components
• Collaborate with research scientists to understand their requirements and establish technical specifications
• Coordinate across teams to ensure design feasibility and compatibility with broader system architecture
• Take ownership of projects independently and drive delivery through to final tape-out
• Expand the range of features supported by quantum processing chips

What We're Looking For

Essential skills and experience:

• Proven experience translating design requirements into functional chip features
• Hands-on experience in chip layout for complex, multi-layer designs
• Experience with metal-track routing and interfaces with photonics and CMOS systems
• Ability to guide chips through the full design process from requirements to tape-out
• Strong collaboration skills for working with scientists and cross-functional engineering teams
• Understanding of how different chip components influence and constrain one another
• Ability to drive design processes, solve problems independently, and take ownership of delivery
• Capability to thrive in a fast-moving, highly technical environment

Highly valued additional experience:

• Scripted generation of layout using GDSFactory in Python or similar tools
• Experience using Cadence for IC layout
• Background in ion trap design, photonics design, or IC packaging

Location requirements: This role is based in Oxford, England, with a hybrid schedule requiring three days per week in the office.
