Senior Mesh Network and MAC Engineer (All Genders)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential defence technology client in Berlin who is building next-generation autonomous platforms for contested environments. Our talent team is seeking a Senior Mesh Network and MAC Engineer to solve critical wireless communication challenges in highly dynamic tactical networks.

This is a rare opportunity to work on directional wireless systems where your protocols will run on physical hardware in demanding real-world conditions. You'll architect the MAC and routing layers that enable robust, self-healing networks across mobile platforms.

Responsibilities

• Architect and implement MAC protocols and routing algorithms tailored for directional multi-node systems, solving neighbour discovery challenges under highly focused, narrow beams
• Build dynamic TDMA schedules and beam coordination mechanisms integrated with physical layer and antenna steering systems, ensuring routing decisions reflect real-time RF characteristics
• Deliver resilient multi-hop relay capabilities sustaining high-bandwidth video and control links between mobile platforms over tactical distances
• Build and maintain multi-node Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testbeds with automated logging pipelines to evaluate network join times and topology reform behaviours
• Bridge theoretical signal processing with real-world hardware execution across software and firmware modules

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Proven track record designing and shipping mesh networking protocols in commercial or defence products—simulation-only experience does not qualify
• Deep, practical familiarity with the Linux networking stack at kernel and packet levels, with strong live-debugging skills on embedded systems
• Radio-literate with hands-on experience designing medium-access control schemes or TDMA schedulers
• Strong understanding of wireless propagation and physical layer realities

Preferred:

• Active contributions to open-source routing protocols such as batman-adv, olsrd, or Babel
• Professional background at tactical mesh networking vendors
• Experience with mmWave backhaul systems or directional beamforming technologies
