Responsibilities

Our client, a confidential defense technology organization, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their team in Sydney, Australia. You will play a critical role in developing unmanned systems for subsurface and other domains, leveraging advanced autonomy for multi-mission capability.

In this position, you will:

  • Create detailed plans, specifications, and mechanical designs for complex autonomous undersea vehicles and related systems
  • Develop prototypes and build complex structures and mechanisms for maritime platforms
  • Conduct simulation and analysis of mechanical designs, including modal/spectral response analysis
  • Ensure all designs meet internal and external maritime standards and regulations
  • Act as a subject matter expert in part design, analysis, and material selection
  • Inspect parts, sub-systems, and vehicles to verify they meet design specifications
  • Design and implement integrated systems with advanced platforms and payloads
  • Balance end-user needs with external constraints in a multi-stakeholder environment
  • Contribute to reusable technology components across multiple product lines
  • Support vehicle and payload manufacturing, testing, and deployment, including Design Validation Testing
  • Travel up to 20% to co-locate with end-users, vendors, or integration teams
  • Mentor junior engineers as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, Naval Architecture, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Professional experience as a Mechanical Engineer with demonstrated domain expertise
  • Ability to work holistically on complex mechanical systems and structures across the full lifecycle
  • Experience acting as technical owner for complex structural components and assemblies
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, requirements definition, and roadmap management skills
  • Capacity to learn and grow while building team cohesion and capacity
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with design, analysis, testing, implementation, and support of mechanical assemblies
  • Background in maritime defense, aerospace, or automotive industries
  • Proficiency with NX, FEMAP, Teamcenter, or similar CAD, FEA, and PLM systems
  • Experience developing Finite Element Method models for stress, strain, and modal analysis
  • Knowledge of welding, machining, sheet metal, injection molding, composites, or additive manufacturing
  • Experience across the product delivery lifecycle from manufacturing through sustainment
