About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential nonprofit organization that directs hundreds of millions of dollars annually to global health and development programs. They are building their communications leadership team to support rapid expansion—this year their grantmaking is expected to approach $1 billion.

We are seeking a Senior Communications Officer, Editorial & Production to lead editorial quality and content production. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll set editorial standards, build systems for scale, manage a small team, and personally shape the organization's most complex communications work. This position reports to the Vice President of Communications and is one of three new senior communications roles being created to support the organization's growth.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end editorial quality and production of organizational communications, serving as senior editor with authority to enforce editorial standards across all content
  • Build and manage workflows, review processes, and production systems that enable consistently excellent content at increasing scale
  • Lead planning, prioritization, and resource allocation for the owned-content portfolio, managing dependencies and complex projects from concept through publication
  • Personally create, edit, or substantially shape the most complex, sensitive, or high-priority content
  • Develop recurring communications and reporting products, translating priorities and messaging into clear, accurate content
  • Oversee website content operations, including teams and processes responsible for routine updates and publishing
  • Serve as senior editorial and production partner to teams across the organization, establishing clear roles, review paths, and timelines
  • Oversee production of design, visual, and multimedia assets, managing internal team members and external contractors
  • Manage and develop one to two team members initially, with responsibility for growing the function over time
  • Collaborate closely with two other Senior Communications Officers and the Vice President of Communications on shared priorities and major initiatives

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience leading editorial and content-production work in complex, high-stakes environments
  • Deep end-to-end ownership experience setting and maintaining editorial standards, managing writers and editors, and building systems for consistently high-quality output
  • Exceptional communications judgment, including ability to assess audience, context, risk, timing, and underlying message substance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to make complex ideas clear and compelling without sacrificing rigor or nuance
  • Track record of building and leading: you've created or substantially rebuilt a team or function, not just inherited one
  • Recent hands-on excellence at your craft with work from the past few years you personally produced or substantially shaped
  • Precise editing skills for complex or technical content; ability to read text literally and notice when claims aren't supported by evidence
  • Experience producing communications that are direct, factual, engaging, and effective—succeeding through substance and clarity rather than embellishment
  • Experience advising executives or senior decision-makers directly
  • Intellectual curiosity and ability to engage deeply with research and complex subject matter
  • Operational judgment to prioritize, allocate resources, manage complex production, and increase capacity over time
  • Understanding of content development across multiple formats (writing, editing, design, audio, graphics, websites)

Qualities that will help you excel:

  • Self-starter who takes ownership and can create structure in evolving environments
  • Proactive and anticipatory, identifying opportunities, risks, and bottlenecks before they become obvious
  • Collaborative leader who raises quality of work around them and builds strong cross-team relationships
  • Comfortable with substantial autonomy and making consequential decisions with limited oversight
  • Energized by intellectually demanding work and creating engaging communications within careful, precise standards
  • Able to develop strong points of view while remaining genuinely open to challenge and better ideas

This role may not be the right fit if:

  • You prefer stepping into mature functions with established systems rather than building while running
  • You want sole ownership of overarching communications strategy and brand
  • You prefer advising on communications to producing and being accountable for them
  • You want to lead a large team from day one
  • You find standards of precision and understatement limiting rather than exciting
