Senior Backend Engineer, AI Orchestration

About This Opportunity

We are representing a fast-growing open-source workflow orchestration company backed by leading European and US venture capital. They are building infrastructure that helps technical teams coordinate complex automation across distributed systems, and AI-driven workflows are becoming a core part of that platform.

This is a backend engineering role focused on building the execution layer for agentic and LLM-based workflows inside a production orchestration engine. You will work in Java on the core platform—not building demos or wrappers, but designing how agent steps are executed, retried, branched, and monitored at scale.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement execution primitives for AI-driven workflows within the orchestration engine
• Build and maintain integrations connecting the platform to LLM providers and agent frameworks
• Collaborate with the product team to translate real-world agent use cases into reusable workflow blueprints
• Ensure AI executions meet the same standards for observability, debuggability, and reliability as the rest of the platform
• Work closely with the orchestration core, where correctness and production stability are paramount

What We're Looking For

• Strong production experience with Java—you have built and maintained systems in Java, not just touched it occasionally
• Hands-on experience with LangChain4j or comparable Java-based agent frameworks
• A clear understanding of how agentic systems execute in practice: tool invocation, state management, retry logic, and failure modes
• Comfort working on infrastructure where reliability and correctness matter more than proof-of-concept demos
• Production AI experience—you have run AI systems in real environments, handled outages, and learned from operational failures (not just side projects or single demos)

Technical environment: Java, Micronaut, Kafka, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, GCP/AWS/Azure

Location: Remote within Europe

Important note: This is a Java-first role. Our client understands most AI tooling is Python-based and can work with candidates who have built AI systems in Python or TypeScript (LangChain.js) if they have a solid Java foundation. However, candidates who only know the Python AI stack and are not comfortable writing production Java will not be a fit.
