About This Opportunity

We are representing a leading UK-based fintech organization in their search for a Senior Backend Engineer to join their growing engineering function in Cardiff. Our client operates a modern banking platform serving millions of customers and is expanding their technical teams across multiple product areas including payments, lending, wealth management, and financial crime prevention.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on challenging distributed systems problems at scale, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver customer-focused solutions. You'll be joining an organization with approximately 650 engineers who value technical excellence, open collaboration, and solving complex problems across the full banking stack.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services for a high-volume banking platform
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, mobile engineers, data analysts, and other disciplines within a squad structure
• Write resilient, scalable code for distributed systems handling millions of transactions
• Work with modern technologies including Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud infrastructure
• Make data-informed decisions with a product mindset focused on customer outcomes
• Participate in system design discussions and technical planning
• Support and improve existing services across various banking functions
• Navigate ambiguity and help drive technical solutions in a fast-paced environment

What We're Looking For

• Strong experience working on backend systems for technology products
• Solid understanding of distributed systems and writing resilient software
• Experience with strongly-typed languages such as Go, Java, C, or Scala
• Product-focused mindset with emphasis on customer outcomes
• Comfort working in teams that deal with ambiguity and rapidly changing requirements
• Passion for learning new technologies and approaches
• Interest in contributing to products used by everyday consumers
• Technical capability aligned with senior engineering expectations

Nice to have: Prior knowledge of Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, AWS/GCP is beneficial but not required—our client provides comprehensive onboarding and support for engineers from diverse technical backgrounds.

Our client does not require formal qualifications or specific degree requirements. They welcome engineers from various backgrounds who demonstrate strong technical skills and eagerness to learn.

Additional Details

Location: Cardiff or UK remote—the organization supports distributed working across the UK with occasional meetings in London when needed
