Lead Machine Learning Scientist, Search

Responsibilities

We are representing a leading fintech organization in their search for a Lead Machine Learning Scientist to join their search and discovery team in Cardiff. This is a rare opportunity to build intelligent systems that help millions of users navigate their financial lives.

As Lead Machine Learning Scientist, you will serve as both a technical leader and hands-on individual contributor. You'll develop and deploy advanced ML models on a modern, cloud-native data platform processing billions of rows of data. Your work will directly impact how customers search for and discover financial information and products.

Your technical work may include:

• Building user and product embeddings to understand customer behaviors and intent
• Developing contextual bandits for real-time decision optimization
• Creating personalized ranking algorithms that improve search relevance and product discovery
• Designing scalable, explainable, and responsible AI solutions that enhance customer trust and transparency
• Owning the end-to-end journey from business problem definition through production deployment and measurable impact
• Experimenting with and justifying technical approaches while demonstrating effectiveness to stakeholders

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Multiple years of track record leading development and deployment of advanced machine learning models in fast-moving technology companies
• Proven experience shipping state-of-the-art ML models to production and delivering measurable business impact
• Fluency in Python with extensive hands-on experience using scikit-learn
• Strong SQL skills and willingness to learn Go for backend microservices work
• Impact-driven mindset with focus on customer outcomes and data-informed decisions
• Self-starter approach: you proactively identify issues and opportunities without direction
• Comfort working with ambiguity and helping teams navigate uncertain territory
• Ability to communicate complex ML concepts to non-technical colleagues
• Adaptability and curiosity about new technologies and approaches

Preferred experience:

• Personalization, ranking, and recommendation systems for consumer applications
• Commercial experience writing production code and working with microservices architectures

Location and flexibility:

• Based in Cardiff or UK remote with occasional travel to London
• Flexible working hours
• Part-time arrangements considered
