Senior Backend Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI infrastructure client in Berlin. They are building high-throughput backend systems that process millions of AI-generated events—chats, API responses, citations, and analytics—under real production constraints.

This is a senior-level role for an engineer who wants to own the reliability, cost, and performance of these systems. You will not simply close tickets. You will make scraping pipelines, queue architectures, source ingestion, and analytics infrastructure more reliable, cheaper, faster, and easier for the team to maintain.

The ideal candidate can debug a provider outage in the morning, design a better queueing model before lunch, ship a service change in the afternoon, and write a clear postmortem that helps the next engineer understand what happened and why.

Responsibilities

• Own and improve backend systems that handle high-volume AI data: chat processing, web scraping, citation extraction, provider integrations, and customer analytics
• Design and operate reliable distributed systems under real constraints: rate limits, flaky third-party APIs, queues, webhooks, retries, distributed locks, and cost ceilings
• Debug production incidents across application code, logs, metrics, queues, provider APIs, databases, network behaviour, and deployment state
• Build durable fixes rather than quick restarts—address root causes like retry amplification, missing backpressure, unsafe parser assumptions, or unmodeled provider limits
• Collaborate with the team to improve observability, reduce noise, and make systems easier to reason about
• Ship changes in TypeScript services running on modern runtimes, with attention to clean design and reliability
• Contribute to incident response, postmortems, and follow-up work that prevents recurrence

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of backend, platform, infrastructure, or distributed systems engineering experience in production environments
• Deep hands-on TypeScript experience, with the ability to design clean, reliable backend systems (not just application code)
• Strong understanding of queues, workers, retries, rate limits, idempotency, distributed locks, webhooks, and failure handling
• Experience operating systems under real production pressure: incidents, provider outages, customer escalations, noisy alerts, slow dependencies, and incomplete data
• Comfort with cloud-native infrastructure: GCP, Kubernetes, Cloud Tasks, Pub/Sub, RabbitMQ, Redis, Postgres, Firestore, ClickHouse, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry
• Ability to debug across layers and separate internal technical detail from customer-safe explanation
• Product-minded judgement—you understand when a small infrastructure change has customer, security, or cost implications
• High ownership and low ego: you take responsibility for ambiguous systems, ask sharp questions, and make the team better through clear thinking and kindness
• A bias toward durable fixes over temporary workarounds

Tech stack: TypeScript, Python, Bun, Node-compatible services, GCP, Kubernetes, Cloud Tasks, Pub/Sub, Firebase/Firestore, Postgres, ClickHouse, Redis, RabbitMQ, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, structured logging. Experience with LLM provider APIs is a plus.
