About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential power engineering organization in their search for a Senior Lead Protection Engineer. This role offers the flexibility to work remotely from various locations across the United States, including Idaho, Florida, Maine, New York, North Carolina, Kansas, and Virginia.

Our client is a growing organization specializing in electrical studies, SCADA systems, and protection engineering. You'll play a crucial role in designing and engineering protection systems for equipment on the bulk power system, including substations, transmission lines, generators, renewables, and industrial and distribution systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead protective relaying projects including symmetrical component analysis, protection philosophy development, relay settings, and SCADA integration
  • Conduct protection analyses: electrical model development, short circuit studies, time-current coordination, arc flash analysis, NERC compliance, and event analysis
  • Lead engineering teams on client projects, ensuring deliverables meet scope, schedule, and budget requirements
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
  • Support occasional onsite visits for data collection and client technical discussions
  • Apply industry standards from IEEE, ANSI, and NERC PRC in protection system design
  • Develop new client relationships and make strategic decisions for project execution
  • Manage multiple project schedules effectively while meeting client needs

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • 12+ years of post-graduation experience executing protective relaying projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at utility, industrial, or commercial scale
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or ability to obtain one
  • Willingness to travel occasionally based on project requirements
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety standards

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven history of leading and completing similar projects in a consulting environment
  • Experience with commissioning and testing, particularly for high-voltage equipment (69kV and higher)
  • Experience mentoring engineers and willingness to continue developing others
  • Proficiency with software such as AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, SKM-PTW, ETAP, or RSCAD
  • Familiarity with hardware from SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB, Beckwith, or RTDS
