About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential gaming technology client in Hamburg who is building a high-performance player acquisition and engagement platform at scale. This is a hands-on role for a senior data engineer who works with AI tools as a core part of their daily workflow, not as an occasional convenience.
You'll own the data foundation that powers business-critical decisions across mobile gaming products, building scalable pipelines and systems that handle high-traffic data flows. This role requires genuine AI fluency—you'll use Claude and similar tools daily to plan, build, debug, and document, treating AI as integral to how modern data engineering gets done.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable ETL pipelines on Databricks, integrating data from mobile products, web platforms, and marketing partner sources
- Build and manage the Data Lakehouse on Databricks, including migrating legacy data products and implementing transformation logic using PySpark
- Monitor and maintain data infrastructure for nightly and near-real-time processing, continuously optimizing pipelines for quality and performance
- Use AI tools daily across the full engineering cycle: planning, implementation, debugging, and documentation, not just for occasional tasks
- Integrate AI directly into version control workflows using Git worktrees or equivalent approaches to run parallel AI-assisted branches
- Maintain structured project context for AI tools (e.g., instruction files) so they remain accurate and useful as codebases grow
- Run multiple AI coding agents on separate tickets simultaneously when appropriate, reviewing and integrating their output
- Collaborate closely with engineering and ML teams to ensure seamless data integration
- Stay current with industry best practices in data engineering and applied AI, bringing new approaches to the team
What We're Looking For
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or bootcamp experience with minimum 4 years professional data engineering experience
- Current, deep hands-on experience with Databricks—at least one year of recent, production-level work designing and optimizing ETL processes, not brief or dated exposure
- Proficiency with AWS services such as S3, Kinesis, and Lambda (or similar cloud technologies)
- Experience with GitLab CI/CD pipelines and PostgreSQL is a plus
- Genuine AI fluency (non-negotiable): daily hands-on use of AI tools like Claude across planning, building, debugging, and documentation—this is core to the role, not optional
- Demonstrated ability to set up and maintain project context and memory for AI coding tools using structured instructions and reusable prompts
- Comfort running parallel tickets with AI assistance using Git worktrees or similar approaches, with ability to explain your actual workflow in detail
- Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and PySpark for data manipulation and processing
- Ability to write clean, maintainable, production-ready code
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Fluent English, both verbal and written
- Genuine openness to AI reshaping how data teams operate, not just tolerance of it
