Remote Backend Django Engineer – AI & Algorithmic Systems

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology startup building AI-driven algorithmic systems. Our client is a remote-first, product-focused organization seeking a Backend Django Engineer to own core features from data modeling through API deployment.

This is a fully remote position open to candidates in Argentina, Colombia, India, Mexico, and Pakistan.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend services and APIs using Python and Django (with Django REST Framework or similar)
• Model and evolve database schemas with clean, well-structured relationships using PostgreSQL
• Implement algorithmic and AI logic in the backend, including scoring, ranking, routing, and decision rules
• Write production-ready code that balances pragmatism with maintainability and iteration speed
• Optimize queries, indexing, and API responses for correctness and performance
• Collaborate with the distributed team to translate product concepts into technical designs and functional endpoints
• Contribute to engineering standards, patterns, and conventions as the team scales

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Strong experience building backend applications with Python and Django
• Solid understanding of relational data modeling and SQL, particularly PostgreSQL
• Proven ability designing and building RESTful APIs
• Experience implementing non-trivial business logic or algorithms (decision flows, scoring rules, optimization logic)
• Good performance instincts: understanding query behavior, avoiding common pitfalls, and using caching strategically
• Startup mindset: comfortable with ambiguity, moving quickly, and iterating based on feedback
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment with clear communication skills

Bonus:

• Startup, side project, or hackathon experience shipping solutions rapidly
• Background in algorithms, optimization, or data-intensive systems
• Production experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
• Familiarity with Redis (caching, queues) and PostgreSQL at scale
• Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, or serverless architectures on GCP
