About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential healthcare technology organization that is building production AI systems at enterprise scale. We are searching for a Principal Architect to own how AI-powered products and applications are designed, built, and shipped across the organization.

This is a hands-on role where you will identify high-value use cases, write product requirements, design end-to-end systems, and ship production code using modern AI coding agents. You'll work with foundation models from leading providers, build agentic systems on frameworks like LangGraph and CrewAI, and ensure clean integration with enterprise platforms, identity services, and data systems.

You will also coach architects and senior engineers on advanced AI-augmented workflows, publish reusable building blocks, and help teams across the organization adopt these practices.

This position is remote and can be performed from anywhere in the continental United States.

Responsibilities

  • Identify high-value AI use cases and shape them into products with clear scope, user need, and success criteria
  • Design and architect AI systems end-to-end, including retrieval, agent orchestration, tool and MCP integration, evaluation harnesses, observability, and human-in-the-loop handoffs
  • Write product requirements, design documents, and architecture decision records for AI products
  • Build production implementations using AI coding agents with disciplined testing, review, and observability
  • Partner with platform and system owners to integrate AI applications with enterprise platforms, following security and compliance standards
  • Use modern AI coding agents as primary production build tools while maintaining high code quality through architectural review
  • Coach other architects and senior engineers on applied-AI coding techniques and AI-augmented workflows
  • Build reusable components including agent skills, MCP servers, sub-agents, prompt libraries, and reference implementations
  • Participate in cross-functional architecture working groups and publish architecture decision records
  • Conduct architecture reviews of AI systems built across the organization
  • Work with security and compliance teams on healthcare and financial regulatory requirements as they apply to AI systems
  • Represent the organization in vendor evaluations and partner programs with major AI providers

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

  • 12+ years in software engineering and architecture, with demonstrated progression from production developer to enterprise architect to applied-AI builder
  • 8+ years operating at the architecture level with a track record of systems you designed, built, and shipped
  • 2+ years building and shipping production AI applications using LLMs, agentic systems, RAG, MCP, and evaluation frameworks
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major foundation model provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, AWS Bedrock, or Azure OpenAI) and at least one agent framework (LangGraph, CrewAI, OpenAI Agents SDK, Semantic Kernel)
  • Strong Python plus one additional production language (TypeScript, Java, Go, or similar)
  • Solid system-design fundamentals across distributed systems, APIs, cloud platforms, data pipelines, and enterprise integration patterns
  • Strong product instinct with ability to identify what to build, scope it, and write the spec independently
  • Proven track record of AI applications shipped to production with disciplined evaluation, testing, and observability
  • Clear communication skills with both engineers and senior leadership
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with multiple foundation model providers with clear understanding of tradeoffs
  • Experience building MCP servers and defining tool integrations for agent ecosystems
  • AI evaluation tooling experience (LangSmith, Braintrust, Promptfoo, or custom evaluation harnesses)
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding agents as production build tools, not just IDE assistants
  • Experience publishing PRDs, product specs, or technical strategy documents as a hands-on architect or staff engineer
  • Contributions to open-source AI projects or communities
  • Healthcare, insurance, or financial services experience with HIPAA familiarity
  • Patent filings, conference talks, or published technical writing on applied AI
  • Cloud certifications
