Lead Software Engineer (Hybrid)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential technology consultancy in their search for a Lead Software Engineer based in London (Waterloo). This is a hybrid role requiring one day per week in the office.

As the lead technologist on consulting engagements, you will:

• Make immediate contributions to projects and rapidly build trust with client stakeholders
• Lead architecture and software design discussions across complex systems
• Work pragmatically to balance technical considerations while delivering high-quality solutions within deadlines
• Collaborate on systems involving the full ML lifecycle, from data ingestion and preprocessing to model deployment and performance monitoring
• Generate new solutions to technical and non-technical challenges in partnership with team members and clients
• Lead or initiate formal feedback conversations with teams and clients through retrospectives
• Clearly articulate and document outcomes whilst driving forward action items
• Ensure your team maintains a healthy, prioritized, estimated backlog
• Manage high-level project roadmaps as team lead for large engagements
• Maintain relationships with client technical leaders through regular syncs, status updates, and risk evaluation
• Identify, mitigate, and resolve blockers to team progress
• Serve as a mentor and contribute to internal knowledge sharing

What We're Looking For

You will have demonstrated long-term success across a variety of projects, typically over 7+ years. You can serve as the go-to leader for software development engagements and bring broad, deep expertise that allows immediate impact.

Essential experience:

• Successfully leading high-stakes consulting engagements from discovery to production
• Building high-quality, maintainable software collaboratively and incrementally
• Writing production-quality code using multiple languages and frameworks including Java, C#/.NET, Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Go, Ruby, Scala, R, and SQL
• Leveraging AI-assistive development tools for scaffolding, refactoring, debugging, test generation, and documentation
• Building or integrating AI/ML-powered features such as recommendation engines, NLP models, computer vision, or predictive analytics
• Using context-appropriate automated testing to inform design choices and catch bugs
• Debugging and refactoring pre-existing code to incrementally improve it
• Collaborating with teams using Git, MacOS/Linux, and CI/CD pipelines
• Addressing architecture-level concerns including scalability, security, reliability, and performance
• Bringing together people from different functions to encourage collaboration and problem solving
• Making thoughtful recommendations and setting direction amid ambiguity
• Mentoring colleagues and sharing knowledge effectively
• Communicating empathically with stakeholders and colleagues
• Leading stakeholders to balance technical considerations with product and user needs

Strongly preferred additional experience:

• Platform engineering: building reusable software foundations and internal developer platforms
• Data engineering, including platforms like Databricks
• Delivering production agentic systems, RAG pipelines, vector search, and frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, AutoGen, and n8n
• DevSecOps, DevOps, and MLOps
• Infrastructure as Code
