Language Lead – English (Contract)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI technology client in their search for a contract Language Lead specializing in English. This remote role offers the chance to serve as the primary linguistic authority for voice AI systems, owning quality assurance and language-specific decisions from end to end.

This is not standard annotation work. You will independently manage annotation quality, audit datasets, monitor product performance, investigate reported issues, and execute projects requiring deep linguistic expertise. You'll be the go-to resource for all English language matters across the organization.

Responsibilities

• Answer questions from annotators about guidelines, edge cases, and language-specific issues through project communication channels
• Cascade new feedback, instructions, and rubric updates to annotation teams
• Listen to annotator-rated audio files and verify that ratings and written feedback align with established rubrics
• Prepare written quality assessments for annotators with specific examples and recommendations
• Evaluate text-to-speech output for pronunciation, prosody, and naturalness, providing ground truth assessments
• Update and expand annotation guidelines when gaps or edge cases are identified
• Prepare and run calibration meetings with annotation teams
• Hold regular office hours during active studies for real-time annotator support
• Develop onboarding materials and resources for new annotators
• Write quality assurance reports on annotation performance and calibration outcomes
• Review production audio and flag quality issues to the technical team
• Investigate language-specific customer-reported issues and identify root causes
• Audit datasets for linguistic accuracy, completeness, and consistency

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Native-level proficiency in English as spoken in the United States
• Experience with data annotation, transcription, or language quality assurance
• Strong foundation in linguistics or a related field, with ability to apply concepts like phonetics, prosody, and intonation when evaluating speech
• Excellent written English proficiency for creating guidelines, feedback, reports, and team communications
• Ability to write clear, structured instructions and deliver specific, actionable feedback
• Comfortable working with data and metrics including inter-rater agreement scores, audit spreadsheets, and structured feedback templates
• Self-directed with ability to manage feedback cycles, QA reviews, and data projects independently
• Authorization to work in your country of residence as a 1099 contractor

Preferred:

• Experience writing or maintaining annotation guidelines or rubrics
• Experience training, mentoring, or managing other annotators
• Experience with audio evaluation, text-to-speech, or speech-to-text systems
• Conversational spoken English proficiency for meetings and calibration sessions
• Experience working with distributed, remote teams

Time Commitment: Approximately 40 hours per week with flexible scheduling. Project hours may vary based on active studies and product needs. Availability during some US Pacific business hours is preferred for team synchronization and real-time support.
