Industrial Design to UX Design Career Changer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a UX education and mentorship organization that is seeking Industrial Design professionals looking to transition into UX Design. Our client sponsors remote apprenticeships that run for 7 months, available during fall or spring sessions.

This is an unpaid apprenticeship program designed for career changers and new graduates who want to break into UX design, UX research, product design, or service design. The program provides 1:1 mentorship and helps participants build a professional portfolio through real-world project work.

What We're Looking For

Essential Requirements:

• Interest in creative technology career paths including UX research, UX design, product design, or service design
• Ability to commit 5-10 hours per week to complete program deliverables
• Availability to attend 2-3 hour weekend lectures OR complete online video course modules
• Openness to feedback from mentors and willingness to revise design work iteratively
• No prior UX portfolio or resume required—this program welcomes those at the very beginning of their career transition

Responsibilities

Throughout this 7-month apprenticeship, you will:

• Build digital products and services from 0-1 for a startup idea or topic of your choice
• Lead the end-to-end design process including product scoping, feature scoping, and project management
• Conduct discovery research by managing user recruitment, creating research plans, writing interview guides, and leading 8-16 discovery interviews
• Synthesize research insights and deliver compelling UX design and business pitches using qualitative and quantitative data
• Create comprehensive UX deliverables including personas, stakeholder maps, journey maps, service blueprints, wireframes, prototypes, and UX workflows
• Lead user testing sessions to improve product usability and iterate on your designs
• Design a unique design system from scratch, including components, style guides, and branding
• Analyze competitors to articulate your solution's differentiators and innovation potential
• Consult with startups to create scopes of work and fulfill UX research and design deliverables

Pay

This is an unpaid apprenticeship program. Alumni of similar programs have gone on to secure UX roles with salaries ranging from $85,000 to $130,000 after program completion.
