Director Software Engineer (Hands-On) | Clients

Wellhub seeks a Director Software Engineer (Hands-On) to lead engineering within our Brazil-based Customer Impact Architecture team. This full-time role combines hands-on technical work with people leadership, shaping how organizations implement workplace wellness globally.

About the Role

You'll lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers, a Product Manager, and Product Designer while maintaining hands-on involvement in architecture and coding. Collaborating with product, design, and analytics, you'll set technical standards, drive strategic initiatives, and build an engineering organization built for sustained growth.

What You'll Do

• Design and own critical, complex platform components with focus on scalability and resilience.
• Establish technical vision and architectural standards across engineering domains.
• Drive strategic initiatives through cross-functional partnership with product and design teams.
• Mentor engineering leaders and foster a high-performing, collaborative culture.
• Manage third-party integrations and APIs for reliable, secure system connectivity.
• Lead modernization of legacy systems to improve performance and developer experience.
• Champion operational excellence through monitoring, incident response, and reliability standards.
• Create an inclusive, motivating environment where engineers grow and take thoughtful risks.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and bring industry insights to guide our platform.
• Model and promote sustainable work practices that support team wellbeing.

Skills & Qualifications

• Proven track record leading multiple engineering teams in product-driven environments.
• Hands-on experience building and extending architectures for large-scale, distributed systems and contemporary web platforms.
• Deep expertise with AWS or Google Cloud and cloud-native design patterns.
• Strong proficiency in RESTful API design and bridging frontend and backend teams.
• Solid foundation in computer science principles: data structures, algorithms, systems design.
• Production experience with relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non-relational data stores (DynamoDB) and scaling practices.
• Demonstrated ability to articulate and communicate technical direction across organizational silos.
• Fluency in Java, Ruby, Go, C++, or comparable backend languages; Go expertise is valued.
• Excellent communicator across functions and time zones, fluent English, with global distributed team leadership experience.
