About This Opportunity
Our talent team is representing a confidential government technology contractor in their search for a Director of Discovery & Framing. This is a rare opportunity to build and lead an entirely new strategic function from the ground up—one designed to help mission-driven organizations identify, quantify, and clearly define their most critical problems before choosing solutions.
You will own the most strategic customer engagements, establish the methodology and quality standards, and build the team required to deliver this discipline at scale. This role is hands-on, client-facing, and deeply rooted in structured problem-solving. If you have led executive strategy sessions at a top-tier consulting firm and are ready to apply that expertise in a mission-critical environment, we want to hear from you.
Responsibilities
You will personally lead high-value Discovery & Framing engagements with senior customer executives, mission leaders, operators, technical stakeholders, and acquisition leaders. Your work begins before the engagement—developing hypotheses with account teams about what is known, what remains uncertain, and what must be learned. During sessions, you facilitate conversations that move beyond initial technical requests to uncover the real mission problem, root causes, measurable impact, and consequences of inaction.
After each engagement, you produce concise, executive-quality outputs that include a validated mission problem, quantified impact, success criteria, stakeholder maps, decision processes, and agreed next steps. These outputs must be immediately actionable for both the customer and internal teams.
Beyond delivery, you will establish the Discovery & Framing function itself. This includes building the methodology, engagement playbooks, question frameworks, quality standards, and team capacity. You will coach and develop additional practitioners while remaining personally involved in the most complex or ambiguous customer situations. Your role is to ensure that every engagement follows a disciplined five-stage process: Prepare, Discover, Frame, Validate, and Mobilize.
You will also maintain independence of judgment. Discovery & Framing is not a product pitch. Your job is to objectively determine whether a meaningful problem exists, whether solving it matters, and whether our client has a credible role. A successful engagement may advance an opportunity, redirect it, reveal a different priority, or disqualify it entirely.
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of client-facing strategy experience in management consulting, strategy consulting, customer strategy, or value advisory roles
- Experience at top-tier consulting firms such as McKinsey, Bain, BCG, Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG, or comparable strategy organizations is highly valued
- Executive facilitation expertise: a proven record of leading executive interviews, workshops, diagnostic engagements, and cross-functional working sessions with senior stakeholders
- Structured problem-solving skills: deep competency in hypothesis-led discovery, issue structuring, root-cause analysis, Five Whys, stakeholder mapping, impact quantification, and synthesis
- Mission intimacy: ability to rapidly learn and operate within a customer's mission context, including their language, operating tempo, constraints, organizational pressures, and failure modes
- Crisp executive communication: outstanding written and verbal skills with the ability to turn complex customer discussions into short, clear, defensible executive readouts
- Team-building leadership: experience building, scaling, or leading a consulting, advisory, or professional services team with a focus on methodology development, quality standards, and capacity planning
Especially valuable:
- Experience working with complex, mission-driven government or regulated organizations
- Acquisition and contracting fluency
- Familiarity with enterprise software, DevSecOps, cloud environments, cybersecurity, or mission systems
- Experience connecting operational requirements to funding and acquisition pathways
- Knowledge of rigorous enterprise qualification methodologies such as MEDDPICC
Success in this role will be measured by customer validation of problem accuracy, establishment of quantified impact and success criteria, improved opportunity qualification, timely and actionable customer outputs, clear engagement outcomes, fewer late-stage surprises, and the development of a scalable Discovery & Framing capability.
