Data Engineer (FedD024)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential defense technology client who is seeking a Data Engineer to support mission-critical government programs. This role requires designing and operating sophisticated data infrastructure on Kubernetes and AWS cloud environments, with a focus on secure data pipelines and streaming technologies.

Important: This position requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret-level DoD security clearance. The employer is a contractor for the U.S. government.

Location: Remote within the USA

Travel: 6-10 times per year

Responsibilities

• Design data workflows, pipelines, and pathways to support ETL/ELT processes while ensuring data quality and secure exchange of sensitive information across cloud and on-premises environments
• Implement systems engineering principles to ensure reliability, scalability, and maintainability of data systems, including backup and recovery strategies
• Architect, deploy, and operate data streaming technologies (Kafka, Redpanda, Kinesis, etc.) on Kubernetes with emphasis on declarative definitions
• Collaborate with platform teams to implement best practices for configuration management, security, and performance optimization within Kubernetes and AWS environments
• Automate infrastructure provisioning, monitoring, and scaling using tools such as Terraform
• Work with cybersecurity SMEs to incorporate best practices and defend data systems against potential threats
• Ensure data systems comply with industry and DoD regulations, standards, and best practices
• Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies related to Kubernetes, containerization, and data engineering

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Minimum 5 years of demonstrated experience building and maintaining production data pipelines, databases, and data exchange services on Kubernetes
• Experience designing, deploying, and operating Kafka/Redpanda data streaming solutions on Kubernetes
• Proven ability to create data pipelines from scratch with capability to process large data volumes and manage data stores
• Strong experience with containerization technologies (Docker) and container orchestration systems (Kubernetes)
• Knowledge of systems engineering principles for reliability, scalability, and maintainability
• Familiarity with API Security, Container Security, and AWS Cloud Security
• Understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices for securing data systems
• Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Strong communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
• U.S. citizenship and ability to pass a pre-employment background check
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret-level DoD security clearance

Preferred:

• Experience with machine learning and generative AI models
• Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform/Pulumi)
• Knowledge of GitOps, Helm/Kustomize, and CNCF projects
