Role Overview

The Cook 3 position at North Dining Hall is a full-time opportunity to advance your culinary career within Notre Dame's residential dining operation. You'll oversee complex food preparation, maintain the highest food safety standards, and collaborate with the dining services team to deliver exceptional meal experiences. This role requires both technical culinary expertise and the ability to mentor lower-level kitchen staff while maintaining efficiency in a high-volume dining environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and cook large quantities of food according to established recipes, portion sizes, and plating standards
• Supervise and guide kitchen staff, ensuring proper technique and adherence to food safety protocols
• Operate and maintain commercial kitchen equipment while identifying maintenance needs
• Monitor food quality, taste, and presentation; adjust seasonings and methods to maintain consistency
• Follow food safety guidelines; maintain clean, organized workstations and storage areas
• Assist with menu planning and ingredient selection for special dining events and themed meals
• Coordinate with purchasing and inventory teams on ingredient needs and prep scheduling
• Train kitchen staff on proper food handling, safety protocols, and cooking techniques

Who We're Looking For

• Culinary experience in a high-volume institutional or commercial kitchen environment
• Current food safety certification or ability to obtain one
• Leadership and mentoring capability with kitchen team members
• Strong knowledge of food preparation methods and cooking techniques
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to food safety standards
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
• Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift regularly, and work in a hot kitchen
• Flexibility to work shifts that may include early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends
