About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential specialty finance organization in their search for a Chief Accounting Officer. This is a transformational leadership role for an accounting executive with deep expertise in the Non-QM mortgage lending space. Our client is a privately held portfolio lender seeking someone who can modernize and scale their accounting operations during a critical growth phase.

This fully remote position offers the opportunity to build, professionalize, and lead an entire accounting function—taking it from its current state to a modern, scalable operation capable of supporting ambitious growth objectives.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead a high-performing accounting team, establishing clear organizational structure, roles, and career development paths from staff accountants through senior management
• Design and execute a comprehensive modernization roadmap for accounting processes, systems, and controls—reducing manual processes and implementing automation
• Lead evaluation and implementation of modern ERP/accounting systems; drive the transition away from spreadsheet-based workflows
• Own the integrity and timeliness of financial statements, ensuring full GAAP compliance and managing relationships with external auditors
• Oversee complex technical accounting matters including revenue recognition, FAS 91, CECL, and other specialty finance accounting requirements
• Standardize and document accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls; strengthen the overall control environment
• Shorten the monthly and quarterly close cycles while simultaneously improving accuracy and control quality
• Partner with finance, FP&A, and business leadership to ensure accounting operations enable strategic objectives
• Manage tax provision, compliance filings, and coordination with external tax advisors
• Build succession planning and cross-training practices to reduce key-person risk within the accounting function

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
• CPA certification required
• Direct experience working within a Non-QM mortgage company is mandatory—candidates must have industry-specific experience in Non-QM mortgage lending, specialty mortgage finance, or closely related mortgage lending environments
• 12+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least 5 years in senior leadership roles (Controller, Assistant Controller, or CAO level)
• Deep working knowledge of FAS 91 and CECL accounting rules and practices
• Proven experience building and scaling accounting teams in growth-stage organizations
• Strong technical expertise in loan portfolio accounting, mortgage lending accounting, and financial services operations
• Demonstrated success implementing ERP and accounting systems; driving process automation and optimization
• Experience with SOX compliance and internal controls design
• Expert-level proficiency in US GAAP, financial reporting, and close management
• Stable internet connection and professional remote work setup for full-time remote work

Strongly Preferred:

• Experience in banking, fintech, commercial lending, real estate finance, or portfolio lending
• Familiarity with Sage 300
• Background in scaling organizations or high-growth environments
