Join Carnegie Mellon University's Mellon College of Science as a Chemistry Technician for the summer of 2026. This is a full-time position based in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, supporting our chemistry department's research and instructional operations.

About the Role

As a Chemistry Technician at Carnegie Mellon, you'll play a vital role in supporting faculty research and lab-based instruction within the Mellon College of Science. You'll work directly with chemistry faculty, graduate students, and research teams to ensure smooth daily operations of our teaching and research laboratories. This summer position offers hands-on experience in a world-class research environment where you'll contribute to meaningful work in the chemical sciences.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare and maintain laboratory solutions, reagents, and standard chemical compounds according to established protocols
  • Set up, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Assist chemistry faculty and graduate researchers with experimental setup and data collection
  • Clean, organize, and maintain laboratory spaces, equipment, and storage areas to ensure safe, efficient operations
  • Record experimental data, observations, and procedures with attention to accuracy and detail
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and materials; coordinate restocking as needed
  • Follow all laboratory safety protocols and assist in maintaining a safe work environment
  • Support routine analytical and routine laboratory procedures

What We're Looking For

  • Current enrollment as an undergraduate student or recent high school graduate with strong interest in chemistry
  • Foundational knowledge of chemistry principles and laboratory safety
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions carefully
  • Organized and reliable work ethic with good time management
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a research team
  • Willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and procedures
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and lab documentation
