Chemical Engineer (Solid Propellants)

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential aerospace organization in Germany that is developing advanced solid propulsion systems. We are seeking a Chemical Engineer to join their propellant development team, working on formulation, characterization, and scale-up of solid rocket propellants from laboratory to production hardware.

This is a hands-on role combining practical laboratory work with engineering judgment. You will be responsible for developing propellant formulations, conducting experiments, supporting quality control, and improving laboratory capabilities to support ambitious space and defense programs.

Responsibilities

• Develop, formulate, prepare, and improve solid propellants for various propulsion requirements
• Plan and execute laboratory experiments, characterize materials, and document results with precision
• Collaborate with propulsion engineers to connect formulation parameters with motor performance outcomes
• Support incoming-goods inspection, supplier engagement, and evaluation of specialty chemicals and raw materials
• Investigate non-conformances, processing issues, unexpected results, and material compatibility challenges
• Enhance laboratory procedures, equipment capability, data quality, safety protocols, and scale-up processes

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, polymer science, energetic materials, or related field
• Hands-on laboratory or process-development experience with solid propellants
• Strong understanding of chemistry, materials behavior, experimental design, and laboratory safety
• Careful, methodical approach to traceability, measurement quality, process control, and documentation
• Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to investigate unexpected results
• Ability to work collaboratively across propulsion, test, manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams

Desirable:

• Experience with solid rocket propellants, binders, oxidizers, metallic fuels, catalysts, or energetic materials
• Propellant characterization techniques: burn-rate measurement, thermal analysis, rheology, mechanical testing, aging studies, or compatibility assessment
• Background scaling formulations or laboratory processes toward repeatable production
• Incoming-material inspection, chemical quality control, supplier qualification, or non-conformance investigation
• Handling hazardous chemicals, explosives, or regulated laboratory processes
• Laboratory data systems, statistical analysis, or Python-based data processing
