AWS DevOps Engineer (Senior) – Migration Project (VMware to AWS)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AWS modernization firm on a senior-level infrastructure engagement. Our client specializes in production-grade cloud migrations that ship on committed timelines, and they need an experienced AWS DevOps Engineer to lead a large-scale VMware-to-AWS migration through to production cutover.

This is a forward-deployed role where you'll own the technical architecture, infrastructure design, and cutover strategy for a complex migration project. You'll build secure, scalable AWS environments from Landing Zones through containerized platforms, while working alongside automation tooling that handles discovery and dependency mapping. Your focus will be on the judgment calls, architecture decisions, and production delivery that traditional migration projects often defer indefinitely.

Responsibilities

• Lead infrastructure design and implementation for a VMware-to-AWS migration from discovery through production cutover
• Architect secure, scalable AWS environments including Landing Zones following AWS best practices
• Design and implement containerized application platforms on Amazon EKS; ECS experience is valued
• Build Infrastructure as Code solutions using Terraform and AWS CloudFormation
• Define and enforce standards for security, backups, high availability, disaster recovery, monitoring, and operations
• Implement configuration management using Ansible, Chef, or similar tools
• Build CI/CD pipelines and manage complete build and release lifecycles
• Drive automation across provisioning, deployment, and operational workflows
• Provide L3-level support for complex infrastructure and platform challenges
• Collaborate with stakeholders on technical strategy and long-term architecture planning
• Mentor engineers and contribute to team development

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 6+ years of hands-on DevOps experience with expertise in designing and managing cloud infrastructure
• Strong experience with VMware-to-AWS migrations or large-scale infrastructure migration projects
• 4+ years working with Terraform and CloudFormation for Infrastructure as Code
• 4+ years in configuration management, systems engineering, and production infrastructure management
• Solid Linux and/or Windows administration background
• Deep knowledge of AWS services: VPC, EC2, IAM, EKS, ECS, RDS, S3, Backup, CloudWatch, and related services
• Production experience with Kubernetes (EKS), ECS, and Docker
• Hands-on experience designing HA, DR, security, and backup strategies
• Experience with Landing Zone setup, multi-account strategy, and AWS governance frameworks
• Strong Git proficiency with understanding of branching and merging strategies
• CI/CD pipeline and automation experience
• Problem-solving mindset oriented toward reliability, performance, and scalability

Preferred:

• Multi-cloud experience across AWS, Azure, and GCP
• AWS certifications such as Solutions Architect Associate/Professional or DevOps Engineer Professional
• Exposure to data platforms: Amazon EMR, Redshift, Lake Formation, SageMaker
• L3/Architect-level cloud architecture design experience
