Senior SRE – OpenStack & Bare Metal (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential cloud infrastructure organization seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join their platform engineering team. This role focuses on building and operating an OpenStack-based on-premise cloud platform with cutting-edge automation and AI-assisted engineering workflows. Responsibilities

• Design and build OpenStack-based on-premise cloud infrastructure, driving complete cloud environments from bare metal to production through highly automated deployment processes
• Develop and operate Infrastructure as Code using Ansible and Terraform, alongside Kubernetes and GitOps workflows with FluxCD/ArgoCD, leveraging AI-assisted development tools
• Own the complete lifecycle of compute infrastructure—from bare metal provisioning, firmware management, and hardware diagnostics through to hypervisors, virtual compute nodes, patching, migrations, host evacuation, and capacity rebalancing
• Build and extend AI substrate and self-healing capabilities, including structured knowledge bases, agentic workflows for incident triage and capacity planning, and automated runbook execution
• Design and implement tests for non-regression, performance, and security; document solutions and continuously improve platform operations based on telemetry and operational feedback
• Serve as a technical reference and sparring partner for peers across automation, platform engineering, and AI tooling domains

What We're Looking For

• Several years of hands-on experience as an SRE, Platform Engineer, or DevOps Engineer running production infrastructure with strong expertise in OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Linux at the bare metal level
• Proven experience managing compute infrastructure end-to-end: firmware/BIOS rollouts, bare-metal provisioning, hardware diagnostics, hypervisors, migrations, host evacuation, graceful drains, and capacity rebalancing
• Active use of AI-assisted engineering in daily work—you leverage LLMs and agentic tools where they meaningfully support development, testing, reviews, or operations, and you understand where AI adds real value versus where strong engineering fundamentals remain essential
• Strong proficiency with Ansible, Terraform, and GitOps workflows such as FluxCD or ArgoCD; you understand what it takes to turn automation into robust, repeatable production systems
• Ideally, proficiency in Go and/or Python with experience using Claude Code, Cursor, Aider, or comparable agentic coding environments
• Experience with observability, networking, compute tuning, auto-remediation, security-critical infrastructure, or multi-site clouds is a strong plus
• Autonomous working style with strong ownership mentality; you enjoy improving systems rather than simply maintaining them and can communicate complex technical topics clearly
• Fluent English (written and spoken) as this is the working language of a distributed team

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and are competitive within the German market for senior platform engineering roles.

The position includes 32 vacation days (increasing with tenure), flexible working hours with home office options, employer-funded pension contributions, 50% public transportation subsidy, up to €400 annual sports contribution, corporate discount programs, and cargo bike leasing support.
