Remote Engineering Manager (Algorithms Team) (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential hospitality technology company seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead their Algorithms team. This is a critical leadership role overseeing the pricing and forecasting engine that serves thousands of hotels globally. You'll build and guide a team of senior engineers while partnering closely with Product to deliver measurable, data-driven outcomes.

This is a genuine leadership position focused on team development, delivery excellence, and technical strategy. While you'll remain technically credible through design reviews and occasional hands-on work, your primary responsibility is leading people and connecting engineering efforts to business goals.

Your Responsibilities

• Build and lead a high-performing team of 4 engineers (including 3 Senior and 1 Staff Engineer) working across pricing algorithms, forecasting models, and data pipelines
• Own delivery quality and operational health of production pricing systems serving thousands of clients
• Develop your team through regular 1:1s, performance reviews, feedback, and career growth planning
• Recruit, onboard, and develop engineering talent to maintain team strength and balance
• Partner with Product Management as a genuine collaborator—challenge direction, propose alternatives, and shape what gets built, not just how
• Translate business objectives into clear engineering roadmaps with measurable outcomes and realistic timelines
• Use data-driven approaches (backtesting, model quality metrics, before/after analysis) to guide prioritization decisions
• Balance delivery velocity with technical sustainability, addressing scalability, reliability, and technical debt as integral parts of delivery
• Provide technical oversight through design and code reviews while staying close enough to guide architecture and step in when needed
• Shield your team from external pressure while maintaining focus and healthy team dynamics
• Drive engineering process improvements across the broader Product and Engineering organization, taking a hands-on leadership role in operational excellence initiatives

What We're Looking For

• Strong software engineering foundation with proven experience building and operating production systems, ideally in backend and data-intensive or algorithmic domains
• Minimum 5 years of professional experience with several years genuinely managing engineers, including performance management—this role requires an experienced manager, not a first-time lead
• Experience growing or managing other managers (such as Associate Engineering Managers or Team Leads) is a strong advantage
• Robust product mindset with confidence to challenge Product Management, define problems collaboratively, and drive alternative solutions to decisions
• Technical credibility with willingness to engage hands-on when the team needs support, while spending most time on leadership rather than daily coding
• Comfort with the technical stack: Python/Django backend, data infrastructure using Snowflake, dbt, and Dagster; experience with forecasting, modeling, or data engineering is highly valuable
• Strong understanding of system design, architecture, and engineering best practices
• Excellent communication and leadership skills with ability to create clarity, build trust, and establish accountability using a servant-leadership approach
• Interest in driving technical improvements that elevate standards across the wider engineering organization
• Fluent English and based in a European time zone (UTC+0 to UTC+2)
• Remote work from Germany required for this position
