Engineering Manager Ads Backend

Responsibilities

Our talent team is representing a confidential TV streaming platform in their search for an Engineering Manager to lead their Ads Backend team. In this hands-on leadership role, you will enable your team to deliver their best work while acting as technical lead on business-critical advertising systems.

You will own the technical vision and architecture of a Server-Side Ad Insertion (SSAI) platform that serves millions of viewers and directly impacts revenue. This includes the entire ad pipeline—from ad decisioning through impression tracking—built as a suite of scalable services.

Your responsibilities include:

• Leading the Ads Backend team both organizationally and technically
• Owning the technical vision and architecture of the SSAI platform alongside senior developers
• Contributing hands-on as technical lead: reviewing designs, raising quality standards, and stepping into critical code when needed
• Managing end-to-end development processes and operational excellence for revenue-impacting services
• Helping shape the technical direction of the broader video platform in collaboration with other engineering teams and Principal Engineers
• Driving cross-team initiatives spanning multiple video engineering teams
• Representing the team to commercial and operational stakeholders
• Directly managing 2-4 engineers and leading hiring efforts
• Growing, developing, and retaining engineering talent

A major re-architecture of the SSAI system is on the horizon, and our client is looking for someone who can help lead this flagship initiative from the front.

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 5+ years leading engineering teams
• Strong, current hands-on engineering skills: you can design, build, and review production code and act as technical lead
• Proficiency in C++ and/or Go
• Experience building highly available services and APIs that scale
• Experience with distributed systems, event-driven architectures, message queues (e.g., Kafka), and non-relational databases (e.g., Scylla)
• Testing as a fundamental part of your software development approach
• Fluent English, written and verbal

Preferred:

• Experience with advertising technology platforms, ad serving, and dynamic ad insertion (DAI/SSAI)
• Broad experience across the video pipeline including ingest, transcoding, packaging, DRM, streaming, and playback

This role is based in Berlin with flexible working arrangements including trust-based hours and remote work options.
