Ubuntu Engineering Lead

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential open-source technology organization seeking an Ubuntu Engineering Lead to join their distributed engineering division. This is a remote position open to candidates anywhere in the world.

We are looking for engineering leaders who are passionate about code quality, performance, and resilience—leaders who have demonstrated success building and developing high-performing technical teams. This role sits at the intersection of hands-on technical contribution and people leadership, requiring you to stay close to the code while guiding your team's growth and delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering teams focused on foundational software, server distributions, desktop environments, or software archive management
• Design, build, and ship high-quality, performant software in Rust, Go, and Python
• Demonstrate sound engineering principles through architecture design, development, and code reviews
• Take ownership of planning, estimation, and execution of technical roadmaps
• Collaborate with product management to define vision and strategy
• Set clear expectations with cross-functional engineering teams, senior leadership, and external stakeholders
• Provide coaching, mentoring, technical feedback, and hands-on career development to your team
• Contribute to upstream and neighboring open-source projects
• Optimize software for performance, reliability, and security
• Debug complex system-level issues and deliver robust solutions
• Author and improve technical and community documentation

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Exceptional academic track record from high school and university
• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM field, or compelling alternative background
• Proven ability to drive and deliver technical work streams that exceed expectations
• Experience leading and coaching others to deliver exceptional engineering work
• Demonstrated passion for open-source software
• Significant professional experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++
• Professional written and spoken English proficiency
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Result-oriented mindset with personal drive to meet commitments
• Ability to travel twice yearly for company events (up to two weeks each)

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience contributing to or leading open-source projects
• Background with Linux distributions or distribution engineering
• Experience with software packaging and distribution mechanisms
• Performance or security engineering expertise
