Sustaining Operations Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential open-source software organization in their search for a Sustaining Operations Engineer. This is a globally remote, fast-paced engineering role focused on Linux-based infrastructure and applications across the entire stack—from bare metal through virtualization, containerization, storage, networking, and orchestration platforms.

This position offers technologists with a passion for Linux and open source the opportunity to work on critical issues affecting millions of users worldwide. You'll collaborate with some of the industry's top engineers while driving success for enterprise customers and the broader open source community.

Responsibilities

• Resolve complex operational problems related to Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, and Kubernetes environments
• Serve as the final point of escalation for critical troubleshooting and issue resolution
• Debug production issues and propose workarounds while coordinating with engineering teams on permanent fixes
• Maintain close working relationships with field teams, support staff, and product engineering
• Participate in upstream open source communities and contribute to project improvements
• Prioritize and manage multiple critical issues simultaneously with sound technical judgment
• Maintain clear, concise technical communications with stakeholders at all levels
• Participate in weekend rotation coverage to support global operations
• Contribute to process improvements, tooling enhancements, and documentation
• Travel internationally up to 10% for team meetings, events, and conferences

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Professional experience troubleshooting advanced Linux system issues in production environments
• Background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar technical field
• Exceptionally strong hands-on experience with at least one of: Linux system internals, LXD, OpenStack, Ceph, or Kubernetes
• Strong debugging skills using Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux platforms
• Proficiency with debugging tools such as gdb, pdb, tcpdump, or similar utilities
• Familiarity with git source code repositories, branching strategies, and version control workflows
• Exceptional academic track record from high school and preferably university
• Willingness to travel up to four times annually for internal events

Preferred additional skills:

• Deep interest in and experience with distributed systems architecture
• Knowledge of QEMU/KVM virtualization, container technologies, or database systems (PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
• Experience with Debian packaging and software distribution
• Passion for technology, continuous learning, and working with high-performing teams
• Strong soft skills including curiosity, flexibility, accountability, and self-motivation
