Engineering Manager – Security Standards and Hardening

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential client in the open-source software sector who is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead their Security Standards and Hardening team. This is a remote position available globally, offering the opportunity to directly impact the security posture of widely deployed Linux infrastructure used by millions worldwide.

In this role, you will lead a team of security engineers focused on certifying core platform components to meet strict industry standards including FIPS, CIS, STIG, FedRAMP, and emerging regulatory requirements. Your team will collaborate with industry partners to define and implement secure operating system deployments across desktop, server, cloud, and edge environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead, develop, and mentor a team of engineers from graduate to senior level
• Provide coaching, career development feedback, and performance management
• Identify and measure team health indicators to maintain a productive engineering culture
• Implement and maintain disciplined engineering processes and best practices
• Represent your team and products to stakeholders, partners, and customers from a technical perspective
• Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects, ensuring timely delivery
• Support product certification efforts for security standards including FIPS, CIS, STIG, FedRAMP, and CRA compliance
• Oversee cryptographic module certification work (FIPS 140) and system hardening initiatives
• Collaborate with industry partners including CIS and DISA on security benchmark development
• Drive collaboration across engineering teams to evangelize security best practices

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM field, or compelling alternative experience
• Proven track record of developing and growing engineering talent
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
• Strong organizational skills with ability to deliver high-quality results on schedule
• Prior hands-on experience working on FIPS or Common Criteria certified products
• In-depth knowledge of FIPS 140 and Common Criteria certification standards
• Direct experience with DISA-STIG or CIS benchmarks, including audit and remediation tooling (e.g., Compliance as Code)
• Deep knowledge and passion for software and application security
• Solid experience working in agile development environments
• Demonstrated commitment to continual learning and professional development
• Result-oriented approach with strong personal drive to meet commitments
• Ability to travel internationally twice per year for team events (up to two weeks each)
• Professional demeanor when interacting with colleagues, partners, and community members

Preferred Qualifications:

• Hands-on domain knowledge of Linux cryptography libraries (OpenSSL, GnuTLS)
• Experience leading security engineering teams in distributed environments
