Lead Linux Kernel Engineer – Ubuntu

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential open-source technology organization in their search for a Lead Linux Kernel Engineer. Our client is seeking an exceptionally talented kernel development expert to drive critical initiatives in platform optimization, security hardening, and systems architecture. This is a fully remote role with global flexibility.

While not a formal management position, you will provide technical leadership to engineering teams and coordinate closely with silicon and cloud partners to deliver enterprise-grade solutions. You'll architect performance enhancements, lead CVE mitigation efforts, and shape the technical direction of kernel delivery at scale.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction and lead delivery for kernel development teams on critical platform initiatives
• Drive engagements with silicon and cloud partners to optimize solutions for their platforms
• Lead vulnerability mitigation efforts and active security hardening in the kernel
• Architect performance and correctness enhancements to maximize reliability and performance
• Streamline packaging and distribution of third-party components for optimal end-user experience
• Develop scalable delivery mechanisms that meet strict quality standards and timelines
• Collaborate with senior technical leadership across teams to coordinate initiative delivery
• Track and coordinate projects working closely with management within and outside the team

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Demonstrated technical expertise equivalent to 15+ years of operating system kernel and distribution experience
• Expert-level proficiency in C programming
• Deep expertise working in Unix-based operating system kernels and distributions (Linux experience ideal but not required)
• Strong capabilities with Python and Bash scripting
• Advanced understanding of git version control system capabilities and nuances
• Prior experience with software packaging formats; Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience highly valued
• Well-organized self-starter who thrives in remote work environments
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
• Strong people skills and natural leadership ability to guide engineering teams
• Ability to travel internationally at least twice yearly for company events up to two weeks

Preferred qualifications:

• Background in RTOS and real-time performance analysis
• Demonstrated experience with kernel patching and debugging
• Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering
• Experience with Rust, particularly as it relates to kernel development
