AI Engineer (f/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential healthcare technology organization based in Berlin, Germany, seeking an AI Engineer to join their technical team. This is a full-time, permanent position working with production AI and machine learning systems in a regulated clinical environment.

In this role, you'll be responsible for taking AI and machine learning concepts from initial design through to scalable, production-ready solutions. You'll work across the complete lifecycle—understanding business requirements, developing solutions, deploying to production, and ensuring ongoing quality and performance.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain production AI and machine learning solutions, including data pipelines, models, and inference services
• Develop LLM-powered features using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agent workflows, tool calling, and structured outputs, with focus on reliability and cost efficiency
• Deliver end-to-end machine learning workflows on Databricks, from data preparation and feature engineering through training, evaluation, and deployment
• Maintain production quality through versioning, evaluation, monitoring, and drift detection; support incident investigation and resolution
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Commercial, and Operations teams to translate business needs into technical requirements and delivery plans
• Contribute to governance-ready data and AI practices covering quality, lineage, access, security, GDPR, and responsible AI, including EU AI Act requirements
• Communicate trade-offs and model limitations to technical and non-technical stakeholders, gathering feedback to prioritize improvements
• Review peer contributions, document knowledge, develop reusable components, and improve shared libraries and platform tooling

What We're Looking For

• Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
• Strong English communication skills at C1 level
• 3–5 years of hands-on experience in Machine Learning Engineering, Applied AI, Data Science, or related field
• Experience taking at least one AI or machine learning solution from prototype into production
• Strong Python skills and practical experience with machine learning frameworks such as scikit-learn or PyTorch
• Solid SQL and data warehouse or lakehouse experience
• Hands-on experience with Databricks, including several of: Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, MLflow, or Workflows
• Experience evaluating and deploying models beyond experimentation, with understanding of monitoring, reliability, and production quality
• Familiarity with LLM application patterns such as RAG, prompt workflows, and evaluation
• Experience with cloud platforms (ideally AWS) and CI/CD practices for machine learning
• Ability to independently deliver well-defined AI/ML tasks and explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
