AI Engineer (f/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential healthcare technology organization based in Hamburg, Germany, seeking an AI Engineer to join their technical team. This is a full-time, permanent position working on production AI and machine learning solutions within a regulated clinical environment.

As part of our client's team, you will develop and operate scalable AI systems across the complete lifecycle—from understanding business requirements through to deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and operate production AI and machine learning solutions, including data pipelines, models and inference services
• Develop LLM-powered features using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agent workflows, tool calling and structured outputs, focusing on reliability and cost efficiency
• Deliver end-to-end machine learning workflows on Databricks, from data preparation and feature development through to batch and real-time deployment
• Maintain production quality through versioning, evaluation, monitoring and drift detection, supporting investigation and recovery when issues arise
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Commercial and Operations teams to translate business needs into technical requirements and realistic delivery plans
• Contribute to governance-ready data and AI practices covering quality, lineage, access, security, GDPR and responsible AI requirements, including EU AI Act compliance
• Explain technical trade-offs and model limitations to stakeholders, gather feedback and prioritize improvements based on impact
• Review peer contributions, document solutions, develop reusable components and improve shared libraries and platform tooling

What We're Looking For

• Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics or related field, or equivalent practical experience
• Strong English communication skills at C1 level
• 3–5 years of hands-on experience in Machine Learning Engineering, Applied AI, Data Science or related field
• Proven experience taking at least one AI or machine learning solution from prototype into production
• Strong Python skills and practical experience with machine learning frameworks such as scikit-learn or PyTorch
• Solid SQL and data warehouse or lakehouse experience
• Hands-on experience with Databricks, including Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, MLflow or Workflows
• Experience evaluating and deploying models in production with understanding of monitoring, reliability and quality practices
• Familiarity with LLM application patterns such as RAG, prompt workflows and evaluation
• Experience with cloud platforms (ideally AWS) and CI/CD practices for machine learning
• Ability to independently deliver well-defined AI/ML tasks and explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
