Product Manager AI Search (m/w/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential e-commerce organization in Hamburg that is building an AI-powered shopping assistant. This system processes over 100 million product offerings, helping users discover and compare products across multiple categories and retailers through conversational AI. We're seeking a Product Manager AI Search to own the quality of AI-generated responses and drive continuous improvement of the platform's search and recommendation capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end answer quality for the AI shopping assistant, from initial observation through production rollout
• Evaluate whether the system correctly understands user intent, recommends appropriate products, and provides meaningful context
• Diagnose root causes when responses underperform—distinguishing between retrieval failures, missing or incorrect product data, and model interpretation issues
• Write and deploy prompt sets, hints, rules, and configurations hands-on; refine attributes and facets; build test datasets
• Measure impact systematically against fixed test query collections, understanding that LLM responses can vary and single cases don't constitute proof
• Implement changes rapidly, often pushing improvements live the same day
• Collaborate with Data and Engineering teams on deeper pipeline issues, translating observations into clear requirements with examples and prioritization
• Oversee partner onboarding, evaluating whether new product catalogs meet quality standards before go-live
• Manage category structures, attributes, and facets that determine what the assistant knows about products—especially for dimensions, compatibility, and hard constraints where semantic similarity alone falls short
• Automate repetitive tasks, leveraging AI-assisted tools where appropriate

What We're Looking For

• Relevant professional experience in e-commerce, product management, or similar roles where you directly drove product development rather than just coordinating it
• Strong hands-on mentality—you want to build and ship things yourself rather than delegate and follow up
• Practical experience working with language models beyond casual prompting: you've systematically improved prompts, compared results, and understand where these systems fail (ideally with Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini)
• Intuition for user needs—you recognize what lies behind a query and when an answer only superficially fits
• Self-driven, results-oriented working style with enthusiasm for contributing ideas actively within a team
• Technical literacy: you can read API responses, understand data structures, and aren't intimidated by SQL—programming not required, but willingness to work directly with systems is essential
• Fluent German required; good English skills expected
• Experience with retrieval, ranking, semantic search, building evaluations and test sets is desirable
• Knowledge of product data, feeds, taxonomies, and attribute systems is advantageous
• Familiarity with automation platforms (n8n, Make, or Python) and MCP/agent integrations is a plus
