Software Engineer, ChatGPT Infrastructure

About the Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI technology organisation seeking a Software Engineer to join their London-based infrastructure team. This role focuses on building and maintaining the backend systems that power a high-scale conversational AI platform used by millions globally.

You'll work on infrastructure that sits close to the product, partnering with engineering teams to improve performance, resilience, and operability of critical user-facing systems. This position combines backend software engineering with distributed systems challenges and production reliability work.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend systems supporting high-traffic user experiences
• Develop shared services, APIs, and infrastructure that enable product teams to launch new capabilities safely
• Improve performance, scalability, and efficiency of production systems as usage grows
• Build and enhance systems for asynchronous processing and large-scale backend workloads
• Lead architectural improvements and infrastructure migrations while maintaining correctness and safe rollout procedures
• Strengthen monitoring, alerting, and diagnostics to detect issues early and reduce customer impact
• Participate in on-call rotation, incident response, and root-cause analysis
• Collaborate across product and infrastructure teams to ensure new systems are reliable, secure, and production-ready
• Build automation and tooling that reduce repetitive operational work and improve engineering effectiveness

What We're Looking For

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant backend or distributed systems work
• Strong proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language and experience writing reliable, maintainable production code
• Experience designing, building, or improving services, platforms, or shared infrastructure at scale
• Understanding of distributed systems concepts: concurrency, consistency, asynchronous processing, and failure handling
• Familiarity with production reliability practices including monitoring, incident response, and operational readiness
• Experience diagnosing performance, scalability, or reliability issues in production environments
• Knowledge of distributed systems, data storage, concurrency, or networking
• Ability to lead complex technical work and collaborate effectively across teams
• Experience introducing production changes safely through testing, staged rollouts, and rollback plans
• Track record of identifying and addressing bottlenecks affecting latency, throughput, or reliability

Ideal candidates enjoy complex systems problems, take ownership of how systems behave in real-world conditions, and care about clear interfaces and practical engineering tradeoffs. Experience with cloud infrastructure, containerized environments, or observability tools is beneficial but not required.
