About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential nonprofit research organization working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and fundamental science. This remote position offers the chance to contribute to cutting-edge AI systems designed to advance scientific discovery and theoretical research.

We are seeking an AI Researcher to investigate, design, and develop state-of-the-art methods that will be integrated into an autonomous research platform. Your work will directly impact how AI can be applied to complex scientific problems, combining deep learning, symbolic reasoning, and multimodal data processing.

Responsibilities

• Research and develop novel model architectures that integrate natural language processing, symbolic reasoning, and domain-specific methods for scientific applications
• Prototype custom tokenization approaches for specialized notation including mathematical symbols and physical units
• Explore and evaluate alternatives to transformer architectures through rigorous research and provide practical recommendations
• Design reinforcement learning systems to enable autonomous reasoning and hypothesis generation
• Build and automate data ingestion pipelines that aggregate scientific literature, metadata, experimental data, and equations in collaboration with data engineering teams
• Establish custom benchmarks to assess models' understanding of domain concepts, mathematical reasoning, and factual accuracy
• Lead model training initiatives including setup, monitoring, optimization, and cost management
• Develop sandbox environments for testing model capabilities while implementing comprehensive logging and evaluation frameworks
• Create guardrails and quality checks to identify and flag suboptimal model outputs
• Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure research translates into robust, production-ready architecture
• Communicate technical findings and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

What We're Looking For

• PhD in physics, computer science, data science, information systems, or a related field
• Proven track record conducting research on AI models for scientific discovery, symbolic reasoning, or deep learning applications
• Strong familiarity with state-of-the-art models, model development best practices, and advanced AI/ML concepts
• Experience with data infrastructure and pipeline design
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to work collaboratively across technical teams
• Comfortable operating in a remote, cross-functional, startup-style environment
• Experience with or strong interest in physics and fundamental science topics is a significant plus
• Prior work on AI research in early-stage or mission-driven organizations is valued
