Engineering Manager, Machine Learning

Responsibilities

We are representing a climate-focused technology organization seeking an Engineering Manager to lead machine learning and data science teams. In this role, you will:

• Lead and manage up to 10 machine learning engineers and data scientists across multiple cross-functional product teams
• Drive technical direction and delivery outcomes for ML-driven product capabilities
• Enable teams to operate as highly productive units delivering high-quality machine learning solutions
• Support work with satellite imagery and geospatial datasets, balancing experimentation with ongoing improvement
• Act as a strategic partner to Product Managers, ensuring technical decisions align with both immediate and long-term objectives
• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Engineering leaders on strategy, technology, and team development
• Foster an inclusive, supportive culture where team members can excel and grow
• Provide regular 1:1 coaching and feedback to help engineers and data scientists reach their career aspirations
• Attract, hire, and grow exceptional ML and data talent
• Evolve ML practices and introduce ways of working that improve collaboration, delivery, and continuous learning

Your primary focus will be building high-performing teams and achieving results through others. While hands-on coding is not expected, you will dive deep technically when needed to support sound decision-making.

Time zone requirement: Europe (GMT/WET, CET, EET) or Eastern North America (NST, AST, EST)

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 8+ years of professional experience building ML or data-driven systems
• At least 3 years managing and leading ML or data-focused teams
• Experience working in a high-growth scale-up or startup environment
• Product-minded approach with ability to demonstrate business impact through technology
• Technical depth in machine learning, data systems, or applied ML sufficient to guide teams and challenge decisions
• Experience with Python-based ML or data workflows and collaborating with data scientists
• Strong leadership skills with a coaching mindset to support engineers and data scientists at all levels
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate in cross-functional environments
• Passion for learning and staying current with evolving technologies
• Interest in climate technology and environmental challenges

Nice to have:

• Engineering background with experience applying software engineering best practices to data and ML systems (reproducibility, testing, monitoring, production deployments)
