Lead Software Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential defence technology client seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join their team in Plymouth. This is a leadership role working on advanced autonomous systems deployed in challenging operational environments.

As the lead technical coordinator, you will oversee multi-domain software development across a fleet of unmanned platforms and ground systems. You'll work with design teams across the UK and Europe, acting as the primary point of contact for all maritime software initiatives. This role requires you to operate across the full technology stack—from front-end interfaces and middleware to embedded systems and firmware—while driving innovation in automation and emerging technologies.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical coordination and leadership across multiple concurrent product developments
• Design and implement best-practice software solutions for emergent technologies
• Manage and continuously improve software engineering processes and standards
• Lead high-level conceptual design of new software products at both application and embedded levels
• Conduct make-versus-buy trade-off studies and negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors
• Collaborate with systems and electrical engineering teams to advise on hosting platforms, from PCs to embedded systems
• Support and participate in regular field testing and demonstrations with defence partners

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience leading complex integration and development programmes
• Strong foundation in software engineering principles and best practices
• Knowledge of software engineering standards (civilian, automotive, or defence)
• Understanding of multi-stage validation and verification techniques
• Experience with simulation techniques ranging from software-regression targets to hardware-in-loop platforms
• Understanding of communication pathways including Ethernet and fieldbus protocols
• Knowledge of real-time control techniques and their limitations
• Experience across multiple platforms: application-level (Linux), embedded systems, and firmware
• Excellent problem-solving ability in high-pressure, resource-constrained environments
• Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams
• Must be eligible for UK Security Clearance
• Ability to travel to the South West England area when required
