Product Manager AI Search (m/w/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential e-commerce organization in Hamburg seeking a Product Manager for AI Search. From day one, you will own answer quality for an AI-powered shopping assistant that surfaces relevant products from a massive catalog—from initial observation through rollout.

Your core responsibilities include:

• Assessing whether the AI assistant understands user intent, surfaces truly relevant products, and provides helpful context—quality means the right answer, not just volume
• Conducting root-cause analysis when responses fall short: distinguishing whether the issue lies in product discovery, missing or incorrect product attributes, or model interpretation
• Writing and deploying prompt sets, hints, and rules yourself; refining attributes and facets; building test sets; and automating repetitive tasks, often AI-assisted
• Measuring impact systematically against fixed test query collections, recognizing that individual cases are not proof and that non-deterministic outputs require statistical validation
• Collaborating with Data and Engineering as a sparring partner, translating observations into clear, prioritized requirements with examples and metrics for issues deeper in the pipeline
• Evaluating new partner integrations, determining what truly improves answer quality, and making go/no-go recommendations for product catalog launches
• Managing category structures, attributes, and facets hands-on, ensuring the assistant has the metadata needed for dimensions like measurements, compatibility, and hard constraints where semantic similarity alone is insufficient

What We're Looking For

• Relevant professional experience in e-commerce, product management, or a comparable role where you drove product outcomes rather than simply coordinating
• Strong hands-on mentality—you prefer building and shipping yourself over delegating and following up
• Practical work with language models beyond casual prompting: systematic prompt improvement, result comparison, and knowledge of where these systems break, ideally with platforms like Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini
• Intuition for user needs—you recognize what lies behind a query and when an answer is only superficially adequate
• Self-directed, results-oriented work style with enthusiasm for contributing ideas actively within a team
• Technical literacy: comfortable reading API responses, understanding data structures, and working with SQL; coding skills not required, but willingness to work directly with systems is essential
• Fluent German; good English proficiency
• Desirable: experience with retrieval, ranking, or semantic search; building evaluations and test sets; product data, feeds, taxonomies, and attribute systems; automation platforms like n8n, Make, or Python; MCP and agent integrations
