Senior ML Engineer (AI Research)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI cloud infrastructure organization in their search for a Senior ML Engineer focused on applied AI research. Our client is at the forefront of developing advanced AI systems, with recent work spanning reinforcement learning for agentic systems, large-scale task data collection, decontaminated evaluation frameworks, and test-time guided search methodologies.

This is a remote position offering the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research that directly influences production AI systems.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will contribute to applied research initiatives that may include:

• Conducting experiments to develop efficient training methods for large language models on traces of environment interactions
• Exploring guided generation and search methods in trajectory spaces
• Designing approaches to mine relevant data at web scale and implementing efficient methods for model post-training
• Running experiments with various reinforcement learning configurations in verifiable domains
• Investigating training methods for AI agents on tasks with non-verifiable reward signals
• Collaborating with adjacent teams to apply research findings in production environments

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Profound understanding of theoretical foundations of machine learning and reinforcement learning
• Deep expertise in modern deep learning for language processing and generation
• Substantial experience training large models on multiple computational nodes
• Strong software engineering skills, particularly in Python
• Deep experience with modern deep learning frameworks (JAX experience preferred)
• Strong communication and leadership abilities
• Experience designing, executing, and analyzing machine learning experiments with statistical rigor
• Ability to formulate research questions, design hypothesis-testing experiments, and draw meaningful conclusions
• Capability to document research findings clearly and contribute to technical publications

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience with deep reinforcement learning for LLMs, including reward modeling, DPO, PPO, and related techniques
• Familiarity with key LLM concepts such as RoPE, ZeRO/FSDP, Flash Attention, and quantization
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related field (Master's or PhD preferred)
• Track record of building and delivering products in dynamic, startup-like environments
• Experience engineering complex distributed systems or high-load web services
• Open-source contributions demonstrating engineering expertise
• Excellent English language communication skills
• Proficiency in contemporary software engineering practices including CI/CD, version control, and unit testing
