Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential photonics technology organization based in Stuttgart. Our client is seeking a Senior Photonics Characterization Engineer to lead critical measurement and validation activities for advanced integrated photonic devices.

In this role, you will:

  • Conduct high-speed characterization measurements in the GHz range on thin-film lithium niobate photonic integrated circuits and photodiodes
  • Perform experimental verification and statistical analysis to determine performance parameters
  • Design, build, and optimize optical and RF test setups including probe station configuration and calibration
  • Develop Python, LabVIEW, and MATLAB tools for measurement automation, data acquisition, and analysis
  • Contribute to hybrid photodiode-PIC integration from design coordination through validation and packaging
  • Feed measurement results back into design, manufacturing, and technology roadmap planning
  • Plan and prioritize characterization campaigns
  • Coordinate with external suppliers, service providers, and research partners
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians in testing, data collection, and analysis techniques
  • Ensure laboratory safety and maintain thorough documentation of methods, code, and results

What We're Looking For

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, or related field
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in industry or research, including at least one year in high-speed photonic testing in the GHz range
  • Knowledge of lithium niobate on insulator device physics and applications in high-speed modulation, detection, and RF signal integrity
  • Hands-on experience with thin-film lithium niobate, photodiode characterization, and hybrid photonic-electronic integration
  • Proficiency with vector network analyzers, high-speed oscilloscopes, optical spectrum analyzers, RF probes, and tunable lasers
  • Understanding of calibration procedures for optical and RF systems
  • Strong Python programming skills; LabVIEW and MATLAB experience advantageous
  • Experience with photonic integrated circuit testing, probe station measurements, optical alignment, and optoelectronic commissioning
  • Excellent English language skills required
  • German language skills are beneficial
