About This Opportunity

We are representing a leading Australian technology marketplace in their search for a Senior Engineering Manager to join their Sydney team. Our client operates a high-traffic digital platform in the home services sector and is experiencing significant growth across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

This is a senior leadership role where you'll lead a portfolio of high-performing software teams through Engineering Managers and Tech Leads. You'll be accountable for people development, delivery outcomes, technical health, and business results across multiple squads within a key domain of the platform.

This position is ideal for a leader who operates beyond the single-team level, connecting engineering execution to commercial strategy while developing the leaders beneath you. You'll also play a key role in shaping how engineering works in an AI-native world, treating AI-augmented delivery and evolving team models as core operational levers.

Responsibilities

• Lead through Engineering Managers and Tech Leads, coaching them as leaders and holding them accountable for team health, delivery, and technical quality
• Own technical and architectural direction across your domain, ensuring designs are coherent, fit for purpose, and aligned to platform standards
• Set the engineering quality bar across CI/CD, testing, observability, security, incident response, and operational health
• Partner with senior Product and Design peers to shape domain strategy, challenge scope and sequencing, and ensure engineering effort creates maximum customer and commercial impact
• Own end-to-end delivery across multiple teams, including planning, execution, dependencies, risks, and measurable outcomes
• Build and maintain a clear technical roadmap that balances architecture, operational health, and feature delivery
• Identify and manage cross-team risks early, including dependencies outside your domain
• Ensure teams have clear, measurable OKRs that ladder up to coherent domain outcomes
• Lead AI-forward ways of working by helping teams understand how AI changes throughput, team shape, roles, skills, and product opportunities

What We're Looking For

• 6+ years' experience in engineering leadership, including at least 3 years leading multiple teams or Engineering Managers, ideally in a product-led technology business
• Ability to lead delivery through outcomes, not process, and comfortable applying modern agile principles at multi-team scale without relying on a rigid framework
• Strong technical foundation with ability to earn respect of senior engineers, challenge architectural decisions, and make credible build, buy, or defer recommendations
• Proven experience developing Engineering Managers, not just engineers, with a focus on multiplying impact through leaders below you
• Experience navigating, or actively navigating, the shift to AI-augmented engineering and understanding how AI changes team shape, throughput expectations, and engineering craft
• Ability to communicate with credibility across senior stakeholders and translate technical complexity into business stakes without oversimplifying
• Strong commercial judgement with ability to connect engineering investment to customer and business outcomes
• Comfort with prioritising ruthlessly when resources are constrained and explaining trade-offs clearly
