About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential photonics technology company in their search for a Field Application Engineer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a critical client-facing role where you'll serve as the technical expert throughout the entire sales cycle, delivering live demonstrations, conducting design reviews, and solving complex hardware challenges in real-time.
Responsibilities
- Lead all technical conversations with clients from initial qualification through design reviews and implementation
- Design, build, and execute live demonstrations of photonics switching technology in customer environments
- Create and maintain test setups that prove product capabilities and fit within client architectures
- Perform on-site debugging and troubleshooting when demonstrations or integrations encounter issues
- Conduct thorough failure analysis to identify root causes of technical problems
- Translate client feedback into actionable insights for product development, engineering, and sales teams
- Serve as the technical bridge throughout the entire sales process
- Present confidently to both senior engineering teams and executive stakeholders
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in customer-facing technical roles such as Field Applications Engineer, Systems Engineer, or similar positions
- Strong background in hardware, optics, or photonics technologies
- Deep understanding of high-speed interfaces, system-level architecture, and hardware bring-up workflows
- Proven debugging skills across optics, hardware, firmware, and software domains
- Ability to troubleshoot complex, ambiguous problems in live customer environments, not just controlled lab settings
- Hands-on experience with test setups, live demonstrations, and failure analysis
- Track record of owning presales technical conversations and converting field insights into product improvements
- Professional presence and credibility with both highly technical engineers and non-technical business leaders
- Adaptable mindset suited to a fast-paced startup environment
- Willingness to travel: primarily Bay Area-based customers, with occasional travel across the USA and to the UK (less than 20% travel overall)
