System Test Engineer

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential photonics organization developing cutting-edge switching technology for high-performance networks. In this role, you will:

• Design and implement system-level test strategies covering planning, setup definition, execution, and reporting for advanced opto-electronic platforms
• Build and maintain complex optical and electronic measurement setups with rigorous attention to stability, repeatability, and safety protocols
• Automate test sequences and data capture pipelines to reduce manual overhead and accelerate validation cycles
• Develop clear visibility into test readiness, critical paths, and opportunities for parallel execution
• Create realistic plans, timelines, and prioritization frameworks aligned with engineering constraints
• Optimize existing test processes by identifying inefficiencies, anticipating failure modes, and preparing setups proactively
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including photonics, electronics, firmware, and product specialists to ensure test outputs meet system-level performance requirements
• Drive disciplined execution with clear understanding of commercial objectives
• Help shape and lead the testing function with competence, sound judgment, and reliability

What We're Looking For

Our client seeks a candidate with:

• Strong hands-on experience in laboratory environments involving complex optical, photonic, or mixed-signal electronic setups
• Proven ability to build, debug, and optimize measurement systems and automate test workflows
• Experience operating in environments where test coverage, data quality, and repeatability are paramount
• Rigorous planning skills with ability to track progress, think in parallel, and flag risks early
• Background that may include photonics, optics, MEMS, mixed-signal electronics, semiconductor test, or high-speed transceiver validation
• Experience with automated test frameworks, scripting for test automation, and data analysis tooling
• Fluency in Python (NumPy) and familiarity with VISA/SCPI protocols (essential)
• Strong organizational capability to set expectations, anticipate bottlenecks, and maintain momentum across teams
• UK-based or willing to relocate, with consistent presence required in the Oxford laboratory

Advantageous experience:

• Scaling system test infrastructure for high-performance communication or switching hardware
• Developing automated analysis pipelines to support data-driven decision making
• Leading or mentoring test or validation teams
• Reliability, environmental, or system-level testing for optical or networking hardware
• Practical commercial mindset balancing speed, risk, and technical depth
