Head of Engineering (m/f/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential European energy-tech organization in their search for a Head of Engineering. This is the most senior technical role in the company—you will lead an engineering team of 11, including two squad leads, and serve as the engineering voice on the leadership team. You will own technical direction, not just execute someone else's roadmap.

This is a hands-on leadership position. You will stay close to the code and architecture while managing the team and setting technical strategy. Your responsibilities include:

• Leading and developing the engineering team: hiring, performance management, growth, and retention
• Owning the technical systems including SaaS platform architecture, metering and IoT integration, time-series data ingestion and quality, forecasting services, and automation infrastructure
• Setting technical direction: architecture decisions, build-vs-buy tradeoffs, and major platform calls
• Delivering quarterly roadmap execution in partnership with Product
• Managing reliability, on-call processes, incident response, security posture, and cloud infrastructure costs
• Working cross-functionally with Product, Data Science, and domain experts to build against real-world constraints
• Making the team more effective without adding unnecessary process—keeping operations lean and focused

What We're Looking For

Must have:

• 3+ years leading engineering teams in a product company, including senior engineers or squad leads
• Hands-on leadership experience in lean teams without multiple management layers
• Proven track record owning delivery predictability and production reliability for customer-facing systems
• Strong technical judgment in at least two areas: cloud and distributed backend/multi-tenant SaaS; high-volume or time-series data pipelines; IoT, device integration and real-time telemetry; ML or optimization in production
• Direct experience running hiring and performance management, including developing engineers and managing performance issues
• Ownership mindset toward incident management, security, and compliance
• Clear written and spoken English; German is a strong advantage given the customer base

Nice to have:

• Experience in energy, industrial, SaaS, or physical-world domains
• Prior experience as the most senior technical leader in an organization

Not required:

• Being the strongest coder on the team—you need to read code, make architecture decisions, and occasionally build, but deep coding isn't the primary focus
• A "Head of" or similar title already—we evaluate what you've accomplished

Pay
