About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential fintech organization expanding its engineering leadership team in Portugal. Our client is building compliance and verification systems that serve businesses across Europe, and they need an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a team of backend engineers working on high-impact onboarding features.
This role combines technical leadership with people management. You'll guide your team through complex engineering challenges in regulated environments while fostering their career development and maintaining high standards for code quality, security, and automation.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of backend engineers, including performance reviews, coaching, and structured career development
- Collaborate with product, compliance, and engineering stakeholders to deliver features that balance security, usability, and regulatory requirements
- Drive technical excellence across the codebase, including clean architecture, automation, and maintainability standards
- Own team delivery, system reliability, and continuous improvement of development processes
- Contribute to technical roadmap definition and architectural decisions
- Mentor engineers on advanced technical challenges and empower independent problem-solving
- Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and capacity planning to scale the team effectively
What We're Looking For
- 1–3 years of experience managing engineers, including performance and career development responsibilities
- 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, ideally in backend systems with Java, Kotlin, or similar technologies
- Experience in systems design, particularly in high-throughput, secure, or regulated environments
- Familiarity with automation-first development principles and reducing manual processes
- Strong communication skills with ability to articulate technical trade-offs to diverse audiences
- Comfortable with Agile development methodologies and managing delivery in fast-paced environments
- Pragmatic, solution-oriented mindset with bias for action and ownership
